Fun on the run for Lara Dutta

The kaapi carrying boys at a Chennai studio are feeling extremely hot under the collar. If the sweltering heat outside was not enough, Lara Dutta, in a tiny maroon and white checked skirt, is also raising the mercury levels. We are on the sets of director Priyadarshan’s Bhaagambhaag, also starring Govinda, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal. Minutes later, Dutta walks into a vanity trailer, now dressed in a maroon salwar kurta. Fully clothed, yet she looks stunning. She has lost weight but her husky voice and throaty laugh remain recognisable.Articulate as ever, but a little breathless because her character of Munni in the comic merry go round has her “running everywhere. Everybody is chasing me. I hold the key to a mystery. It’s a mad film with a whole lot of crazy characters,” she says. It’s her first try at comedy and she certainly doesn’t think it’s a joke. In fact she claims to have been petrified of her director.

Lara Dutta is all excited about her first comedy film, Bhagambhaag, with Priyadarshan.
“Initially I was very scared of Priyan. He has a sarcastic sense of humour and he doesn’t believe in retakes. He will just ask for one or two takes and if you can’t get your act right, heaven help you.” That she was surrounded by Govinda “a powerhouse of talent”, Akshay Kumar “who is so good at comedy” and Paresh Rawal “now, what can I say about his comic timing” only added to her woes till she got it all right. “You can't be unaffected by them for too long,” she chortles.
She also takes pride in the fact that being the only heroine with “a hugely male cast” she was pampered the most. “I was also ragged and made a butt of jokes. Then came a phase when they all treated me like their buddy and would include me too in their jokes.” Talking to Dutta, it is obvious that she has had a great time shooting for the film. But wouldn’t her co-stars sideline her, especially in a Priyan film where the men always take away the best lines?“No, it doesn’t really matter. I had always wanted to work with Priyan in a comedy and that’s precisely what I’m doing. I have got into this fully aware of my role and the script. When else am I going to get a chance to be surrounded by so many talented comic actors? And don’t forget — I’m the only girl in the film!”The former beauty queen is also gung ho about her other assignment, Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. But she says she can’t reveal anything about the film which also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol. After spending a month in London, shooting for Bhaagambhaag, she is back there with Jhoom.
Talk veers to Percept Picture Company’s project, Amarjeet, directed by Shoojit Sircar, which was launched with her in the lead part of a woman who takes on the tobacco industry But the film got shelved. “Yeah, the producers didn’t seem comfortable backing Shoojit on that film. It’s a pity,” she says.
With just the Ashtavinayak production Bhaagambhaag and Yashraj Films’ Jhoom Barabar Jhoom in her kitty Dutta says she’s happy doing just this much at the moment. And is she thanking her stars for not taking on Ameesha Patel’s role in Aap Ki Khatir now that it has sunk without a trace? “Well, let’s just say that I didn’t want to do the film when it was offered to me.” On that note, she breezes out to set the temperature soaring again.

I'm in awe of Paresh Rawal: Lara Dutta

Lara Dutta shares what it was like being the only woman on the all-male set of 'Bhagambhag'.
We caught up with Lara Dutta in Chennai on the sets of 'Bhagambhag' looking hotter than ever, as she has lost some weight. "It always feels nice to get a compliment of this sort," says Lara who has been regularly working out, apart from keeping a strict eye on her diet.
What has her excited is the fact that she is the only female actor in the predominantly male cast of Priyadarshan's film, which includes Akshay Kumar, Govinda and Paresh Rawal. However, she says that being the only woman, she has been ragged non-stop on the sets.
"I have become the butt of all their jokes. But after they saw me doing some stunts for my scenes, they have stopped being nasty to me. They even started considering me one of their buddies and I had to listen to all that typical man talk! And man! Most of their conversations revolved around women!" she says with a laugh.
"Finally, they came to the consensus that they were tired of looking only at me and they needed some other heroines too! But I must say they have all pampered me silly!" she adds. However, there was one wish that she couldn't fulfil even as they completed their last schedule in Chennai. "I am in awe of Paresh Rawal. However, I have yet not been able to muster up the courage to tell him that I am a big fan of his," she says shyly.
Lara was all set to fly off to London to join Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol. She says, "That schedule should be fun too. But here they are going to miss me. Serves them right, they won't have any woman around now!"

Indian actress Lara Dutta to star in her first comic Bollywood flick

Former beauty queen Lara Dutta is trying her hand at comedy for the first time since beginning her Bollywood career three years ago.
Dutta told the Hindustan Times newspaper it was a great learning experience to work with well-known actors such as Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Govinda, who uses only a single name, in the new movie "Bhaagam Bhaag," or "Running Around."
"When else am I going to get a chance to be surrounded by so many talented comic actors?" she was quoted as saying.
The movie also has a mystery woven into the plot, Dutta reportedly said, adding she was at the center of all the action. "Everybody is chasing me," she said. "I hold the key to a mystery. It's a mad film with a whole lot of crazy characters."
Dutta has acted in 15 Bollywood movies.

Lara seeks solace in the Art of Living

It’s a lesser-known fact that Lara Dutta has been pursuing Art of Living courses for over six years now.
This former Miss Universe had her first stint with various self-development and stress management programmes as a Miss India aspirant.
"It was a compulsory module in our Miss India training programme. Gradually, I got hooked on to it after I realised the benefits of the course," she says.
This led her to enrol for advanced courses and now the belle can’t think of starting her day without meditation.
"Over these six years, I have done these advanced courses and now I can’t think of life without practising the yogasanas," she says.
Ask her about her favourite exercise and the prompt answer is Sudarshan Kriya, a key technique to Art of Living (founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 1982).
‘It’s incredible’
"It’s an incredible stress-relieving technique that I have learnt. I have been into yoga and pilates for years now. But Sudarshan Kriya helps you retain your calm and be aware of everything that’s happening around.
The past few months have been less hectic. Therefore, I could get more involved in it and am doing a couple of more courses," she explains.
Others followed
Seeing her reaping the benefits of Art of Living, a lot of her friends got interested in the popular stress-relieving method.
"The benefits are quite visible. My close friends did realise it and gradually for themselves enrolled for it. There are 20 million people around the world who practise Art of Living," she says.
Even Kelly is now practicing the Art of Living religiously, but Lara says she didn’t sell the course to him, "I never pushed Kelly into pursuing the Art Of Living. I believe you can’t force someone to do anything. It has been a few months since he has started and he is relatively new to the exercise," adds Dutta.

Lara Dutta intimidated by Sanjay Dutt

Lara Dutt made her entry into bollywood after she won the Miss Universe crown; she made her debut in Andaaz alongside Miss World Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar. Although Lara Dutta has not yet received her break in the industry in the form of a solo hit, nonetheless Lara is thoroughly satisfied with the films that she has done so far. Apart from her professional life, Lara is also extremely happy with her personal life as she has been seeing model Kelly Dorjee since the last seven years.
Lara however does not see her relationship affecting her career in bollywood; she does not believe that her long term relationship with boyfriend Kelly will ever be the reason for lack of work in the film industry. Lara is also known for her playfulness and loves keeping names for all her male co-stars. Lara has re-christened some of her co-stars like John Abraham whom she calls ‘Sidey’; in turn John calls her ‘Item’. She has also given Vivek Oberoi the name ‘Britannica’ because of how well-informed he is on a variety of subjects. But Lara has two names for her co-star Abhishek Bachchan, sometimes she calls him ‘Pouty’ because his lips are miles away from his face and at times she even calls him ‘Amma’ when he behaves in his over-protective manner.
Lara has also worked with Sanjay Dutt in ‘Zinda’ but unfortunately he is one co-star who Lara does not dare to give a name and that is because she is intimidated by him. However Lara herself too has a nickname given by her first co-star Akshay Kumar, he calls her ‘Paaji’ as often she would behave in a very tom-boyish manner. Lara Dutta has received appreciation in her multi-starrer films like Masti and her recent film No Entry. Lara will be appearing in a chat show ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’ where she will talk about her love, life and bollywood career.
